ST. STEPHAN BULGARIAN CHURCH also known as the IRON CHURCH is again in our ISTANBUL TOURS
The 120-year old iconic church reopened after seven years of restoration.
This one and only iron church of the World was built in 1898 by the Bulgarian community of Istanbul. 500 tons of iron components were all carried on barges from Vienna, Austria via the Danube River and bells are presents from Russia. With three domes and rich exterior decoration, the church stands out among many other Orthodox churches in Istanbul.
Total cost of the restoration was $ 3.5 million. The Bulgarian government also contributed and was represented by the Prime Minister Borisov at the reopening ceremony. In addition to Turkish President and Prime Minister, leaders of the three main relegions in Turkey joined the ceremony as well.
